Blog: Next New

A form of new media that doesn't exist might become a reality with the development virtual reality technology and it would be a form of teaching through virtual reality gear. When this kind of technology becomes more widespread and common kids in countries or neighborhoods with unsafe environments or just low resources might be able to learn in virtual reality with teachers and they wouldn't be limited by classroom supplies or distance. The classes could have teachers and students from around the world could be in any sort of classroom virtual reality can create. This would allows people to get high quality education from remote areas while still have face to face interaction and conversations.

Blog: P2P

File sharing is the act of transferring files from one computer to another through a local network or the internet. P2P or peer to peer file sharing is when you use software to download files on the internet where it connects you to other users using P2P software and downloads the files from the combination of other users essentially creating a small network between other users to upload/download a file/s. Some common examples of P2P software are downloading movies or shows on Piratebay/1337x using software like Utorrent/Bittorrent. Blog: Wiki So Far

I have been researching more to add to the gaming category of the class wiki as I see that there is a lot of good content and passionate videogamers who have also taken this new media class. I plan to add a section about Rainbow Six Siege under the Ubisoft section which contains games created by Ubisoft and I plan to add information about the core gameplay, why it is different from other types of first person shooters and some information about the various operators that are in the game. I also will add a subsection about tips for people who might possibly want to try the game, but don't know where to start or what to learn as it is a fairly complex game.

Advice

If I were to be hired by Baruch to improve the college through new media one suggestion I would have would be to consolidate the many Facebook groups that represent students at Baruch. Each new year of students at Baruch create a new page on Facebook to have a group where they can ask other students who are on a similar timeline in college about classes to take, advice for major tracks, best food spots, reselling textbooks and anything else, but this also means that all the information on these pages are limited to Facebook users who specifically know about these Baruch groups. I would recommend Baruch to create a modern forum where all these groups for each year of students, clubs, majors and any other categories can exist and all Baruch students can simply log in with their CUNY accounts. This would result in far more students participating in forums and learning valuable information or just building more of a community experience. It would also serve as an interesting archive of how...

Privacy

In the age of new media people have started to realize how false their sense of privacy online is. Browsers, websites, search engines, and internet service providers all record a person's activity online especially if their logged into accounts and are not taking any preventative measures to protect their own privacy. More and more people learning about massive data breaches like the multiple Facebook breaches have started to learn what they can do to protect their privacy on new media platforms because the government has done little to stop companies from compiling data on individuals on a massive scale. Virtual private networks (VPN) have become popular to hide information from internet service providers, websites, and applications that try to get information from user activity based on their IP address. Browsers like Firefox, Brave and Tor have increased in use because Google Chrome gives Google access to all your web activities and uses that information to cater to each user an...

Creativity and New Media

The form of New Media I enjoy participating the most is video gaming and one game that I enjoy currently is Rainbow Six Siege. The screenshot above is one of the characters that I particularly enjoy playing is Dokkaebi who is a Korean special forces operator and I have customized her outfit and gun. The basic premise of the game being one side defends a site, i.e. a house, and the other sides goal is to attack the site and complete the objective. Now for creativity this game has changed it up from a typical shooter game in that it tries to have realistic environments where walls are destructible and you can rappel off of buildings. I enjoy having to be more creative in a shooter game where there can be any number of strategies to completing the objective from breaking down entire walls to get to a room to rappelling in from a broken window. An example of the use of Dokkaebi's gadget is when she hacks the phones of the opposing team forcing their phones to start ringing giving Do...

HW Creativity

One of the markets that utilizes the creativity generate by new media is the video game industry. Many games these days from single player to multiplayer rely on it's consumers for feedback and their creativity for new content to add to their product. Something special to this industry is the idea of modding where any user can modify a game to fit their ideal product or add additional content to the game. Modding can extend the lifespan of a game for years on end and one popular example is Minecraft where the developers of the game realized that they could rely on creativity of their players to expand on the game infinitely without a single cost to them while getting free advertising. These mod for Minecraft can vary from exploring fantasy kingdoms and fighting dragons to flying around futuristic cities in a Iron Man suit.  It shows how a company that interacts with their consumers and enable their creative ideas can get so much value in return for little to no investment.
