In the age of new media people have started to realize how false their sense of privacy online is. Browsers, websites, search engines, and internet service providers all record a person's activity online especially if their logged into accounts and are not taking any preventative measures to protect their own privacy. More and more people learning about massive data breaches like the multiple Facebook breaches have started to learn what they can do to protect their privacy on new media platforms because the government has done little to stop companies from compiling data on individuals on a massive scale. Virtual private networks (VPN) have become popular to hide information from internet service providers, websites, and applications that try to get information from user activity based on their IP address. Browsers like Firefox, Brave and Tor have increased in use because Google Chrome gives Google access to all your web activities and uses that information to cater to each user and while it might be seen as convenient for many people it can also be seen as a breach of privacy. Privacy in new media will continue to be an issue as people ask themselves whether they value their privacy more or the convenience that comes with giving private companies access to all their data in exchange for convenience.
