These virtual world can be used for a variety of purposes because they can be changed to whatever the creator desires. Common uses are educational, for communication, training, for entertainment and simulation. The pros are that it allows people to train in environments and situations without being in real danger such as soldiers training in virtual worlds for various combat scenarios. It also allows people to communicate in a new "face to face" form without actually being in the same physical room, but in the same virtual room. Some downsides of this technology are that they cannot actually simulated real human sensations at this point meaning we can't smell or feel the virtual environment and we can still tell its a virtual environment through our sight because it's not 100% realistic. These worlds foster creativity because the possibilities aren't limited by the laws of our physical world and creators can make whatever virtual worlds they want from recreations of no longer existing landmarks to whole new alien worlds. The future of virtual worlds will bring more and more realistic worlds and possibly the remaining senses that can't be duplicated at present such as feel and smell.
